There’s refreshing confidence on display that says the audience will either come on board with a character casting spells and walking through a secret world, or they won’t. At its best moments, Last Witch Hunter recalls the unabashedly dark magic details of Constantine and the world building of John Wick.

Kaulder prefers to handle matters peacefully when possible, but when his friend Dolan the 36th ( Michael Caine) is attacked, an investigation reveals that the Witch Queen is trying to return.Īfter the movie powers through a rough opening (the action inside of the Witch Queen’s lair is borderline incomprehensible) that also includes Kaulder mansplaining witchcraft to a teenage female witch on an airplane, the story starts to pick up and flesh out the details of Kaulder’s world. Cut to the present day, and Kaulder is the “weapon” of the Axe and Cross, a secret sect of the Catholic Church devoted to stopping witches, who are defined as humans with magic in their blood. Kaulder manages to impale the Witch Queen, but she curses him with immortality. The Cabinet of Dr.The movie begins 800 years ago when Kaulder (Diesel) and a group of fellow warriors go to the Witch Queen’s ( Julie Engelbrecht) lair to kill her and stop the black plague. In conclusion, I was really willing to love that movie, but it ended up being one of this year biggest disappointment for me. The fight scenes, a little too bland, couldn’t save the movie.
The movie is 100 minutes but feels like an eternity. Thereee is a huge lack of any kind of suspense. Despite the presence of some of Hollywood best actors (I am not speaking of Vin Diesel here), the movie totally fails at keeping the viewer interested (I spotted many people sleeping in the cinema). The mythology part is well-developed and the visuals are good – with some really convincing, dark looking, CGI.īut the story is really too weak to be overlooked. This said, the fantasy world built for the movie, one where witches are allowed to live among humankind as long as they do not use their powers in harmful ways, is the best thing about this movie. The story seemed similar to every single action/horror movies: an old evil is about to be waked up and Vin Diesel has to stop it and save the world. The three movies actually share a lot of similarities: action-oriented, dark-themed, big casting, but also a very uninspired scenario (maybe less true for Constantine). The movie is to witches what Blade is to vampires or Constantine to demons, an insipid attempt to turns a horror genre into a muscle, action-packed movie. With its huge cast – Vin Diesel, Elijah Woods, Rose Leslie, and Michael Caine – I was really expecting something great, but I couldn’t have been more disappointed. The Last Witch Hunter is Hollywood latest horror-themed big-budget action movie (90 million!). Will he be strong enough to halt the conspiracy that aims to bring back the world to its dark old days?
